Peace of Mind
In an emergency a member is just a phone call away. For instance, back before the first directory was even printed, there was an entire family from Indiana who found themselves really stuck in a small town in the deserts of Texas. They had totaled their van with wheelchair lift in a traffic accident. When new members Doug & Susanna Harrison with Wheelchair Getaways near San Antonio were made aware of the situation, they contacted Rick Crowder the founder of Travelin' Talk. He jumped on the phone and called all kinds of great people.
How the story turned out, the Harrisons provided the family with one of their vans and led them to San Antonio. Another friend put them up in his new wheelchair accessible house for the weekend (because all the hotels were full from several conventions). American Airlines kicked-in with free tickets for a flight to Chicago. Airborne Express delivered all their camping gear and personal goods for free. Another member met them at the airport with a van with lift he borrowed from a local independent living center and drove them home to Indiana.
Now fortunately, most problems that occur away from home are not as serious or dramatic as this, but it's sure nice to know that you have friends out there who know the area and local resources
